The Thomas Tierney Award for Good Citizenship was set up by the community council to commemorate Tam Tierney, a committed
and enthusiastic member who died suddenly in 2000, and to encourage active citizenship.
Each December local residents are asked to nominate a person who they think would justify the title of 'Drylaw Citizen
of the Year'. From these nominations our community council selects a local resident who we feel has has done something special
to make life better for people in Drylaw Telford - sometimes it's someone who's an especially good neighbour, or perhaps someone
whose volunteering or charitable activities make them an ideal recipient.
We believe it's important to recognise those unsung heroes, those people who do so much unseen work that enriches the
life of our community. It's our way of saying thanks on the public's behalf, and we also hope the award will both improve
community spirit and also encourage more residents to give up a wee bit of their time to support their community.
The Award has continued to blossom since it was launched, and winners range in age from teens to eighties, but every
one has done something extra to enhance life in our community.
Our 2006 winner was Evelyn Crawford, a hugely popular choice for her many years of voluntary work in the area.
Evelyn received her award at a special presentation evening held in Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre on 31 January, and and
a good night was had by all!
